From comfort to courage: My journey into consulting

Two years ago, I made a decision that would change the trajectory of my career and life. I pivoted from a stable corporate role to the dynamic world of consulting. Many people ask me why I made this leap, how I found the courage, and what steps I took to make it happen. Today, I’m sharing my story in hopes it might inspire others contemplating a similar change.

The catalyst for my pivot wasn’t a single event but rather a gradual realization that I had outgrown my role. I felt stagnant, unchallenged, and increasingly disconnected from the work I was doing. There was a gnawing sense that I had more to offer and a growing desire to align my career with my personal values and goals – and the opportunity to be more present with my family and friends.

But desire alone isn’t enough to make a successful pivot. I knew I needed to approach this transition strategically. One of the most critical steps I took was diving deep into financial information.

Understanding the financial implications of my decision, from potential income fluctuations to managing business expenses (especially insurance), was crucial. This knowledge not only prepared me practically but also gave me the confidence to take the leap.

I also spent time reflecting on my motivations, goals, skills, and interests. I asked myself hard questions about what I truly wanted from my career and what success looked like to me. This process helped me recognize the unique value I could bring to consulting and highlighted the areas where I needed to grow.

Networking played a pivotal role in my transition. I reached out to consultants, attended industry events, and had countless coffee chats. These conversations provided invaluable insights into the consulting world and helped me build a support network (an informal board of advisors) that proved crucial during my early days as a consultant.

The journey wasn’t always smooth. There were moments of doubt, setbacks, imposter feelings, and steep learning curves. But each challenge reinforced my decision and helped me grow both professionally and personally.

Two years on, I can confidently say that pivoting to consulting was one of the best decisions I’ve made. It has allowed me to continuously learn, take on diverse challenges, and make a meaningful impact across various industries.

For those contemplating a similar move, remember that courage isn’t the absence of fear but the decision to move forward despite it. Take the time to understand your motivations, assess your skills, and, most importantly, arm yourself with knowledge - especially financial knowledge. Your path may look different from mine, but with careful planning and a leap of faith, you too can turn your career aspirations into reality.
