How to make relocation work in the world of work from anywhere
Even in this new work-from-home/work-from-everywhere world, there are roles, positions, and functions that require someone to relocate. Here are some tips for companies to make these moves easier on the new employee and their family – beyond just matching them with a realtor.
Include the whole family in the move. Find out the ages, interests, and important factors for all who will be moving. Make connections within the new community for them, such as youth sports, arts or music programs and helping to find the right schools and house locations.
Help beyond the move. One of my secret tools was an organizer who helped relocates settle into their home – and in some cases, helped them pare down items before the move to make their new home less cluttered.
Assist with community connections. Help them connect with organizations that align with their interests or needs – and think of the little things. For example, I once spoke with a couple that had moved a year prior – they hadn’t been on a date night as they couldn’t find a babysitter they trusted. A few phone calls later, we had them matched with a fellow employee’s daughter who lived just a few blocks away.
Help them learn and adapt to their new hometown. Point out what makes their new location special and ensure they adapt to the climate and have what they need. For example, if they’re coming from Florida to a northern city… do they have shovels for snow or even winter coats? And gGive them local insider information about places to explore, restaurants to try, and favorite recreation spots.
Providing a little extra support and access to resources will go a long way to ensure that employees who relocate stay and make a home in their new hometown.
