The 15-minute phone screen

Ever feel like you’re wasting time on lengthy phone screens that go nowhere? Here’s how to make those crucial 15 minutes tell you everything you need to know about a candidate.

Start with a “walk me through” (3 minutes)

Instead of the usual “tell me about yourself,” try this: “Walk me through the experience that best prepared you for this role.” This question reveals whether candidates understand your role and can connect their experience to your needs.

Ask the deal-breakers First (5 minutes)

Don’t wait until the in-person interview to discover non-negotiables. Hit these points early:

  • Work location expectations

  • Salary range alignment

  • Start date availability

  • Required certifications/clearances

Power behavioral questions (5 minutes)

Choose two of these revealing questions:

  • “Tell me about a mistake you made and how you fixed it (shows accountability and problem-solving)

  • “Share how a positive relationship helped you complete a task better or faster” (reveals collaboration skills)

  • “Describe a time when you had to learn something new quickly” (demonstrates adaptability)

Final 2 Minutes: Their turn

Let them ask one question. The quality and preparation behind their question often tell you as much as their other answers.

Remember: A great 15-minute phone screen isn’t about rushing — it’s about being focused and strategic with your questions.
