Welcome to the work world, new graduates!

Over the next few weeks, colleges and universities are sending a new class of students out into the working world. For these new graduates, the job search can be an exciting yet daunting process. While it has improved since the pandemic-driven downturn, today’s graduates still face stiff competition for entry-level roles. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, only 32% of the Class of 2022 had a job offer lined up before graduating.

New grads must also overcome a lack of professional experience compared to other candidates. A 2022 survey found 61% of employers prefer to hire those with relevant work experience for entry-level jobs. (Don’t get me started on requiring experience for an entry-level job!)

Here are a few tips for standing out in the entry-level candidate pool.

Gain relevant experience: Internships, co-ops, volunteer roles, and class projects can provide practical experience to discuss in interviews. Highlight any transferable skills gained through part-time jobs.

Build your brand and network: Create an online portfolio or personal website showcasing your best work. Leverage social media platforms like LinkedIn to network and share your expertise.

Customize applications: Tailor your resume and cover letter to each specific role. Emphasize how your background aligns with the job requirements.

Prepare for interviews: Research the company thoroughly and practice answering common interview questions. Be ready to discuss why you’re the ideal candidate.

While the path to employment can be challenging, new graduates can improve their chances by being proactive and persistent in their job search efforts. You’ve got this — and welcome to the work world!
