Forget the myth: If you post it, they will come

Ever since I entered recruiting, the idea has been “if you post it, they will come.” The new reality is you need to build the skilled talent the organization needs to power your business going forward.

So, change your philosophy to: “We need to build – and engage with – the talent we are going to need.”

Some quick starts:

  • Look internally for people who can be re-skilled or up-skilled to fill new roles.  Offering these opportunities to people you have already invested in will reap dividends.

  • Look at your Tuition Reimbursement program. Who is enrolled in programs for skills you will need in the future? What can you do to support them to succeed? Are there mentorship or study programs you can help with?

  • Look at local colleges and community colleges –- do they have programs, or can you help them build programs, to train people for the jobs you will need? Can you sponsor or use scholarships to encourage those students to work for you?

  • Get involved with local high schools to inspire future talent.  How can you engage students to drive interest in your field?  Try sponsoring or participating in career events - or offer a project for students to work on.
