The rule of 3 for job requirements

There’s an often quoted research finding that states women won’t apply for jobs when they don’t meet all the requirements while men will.  Honestly, I was skeptical of that finding until I found myself doing it when looking at postings.

Often I see job postings packed with requirements – and it makes me wonder how many outstanding candidates the organization is missing. I recommend applying the rule of three job requirements:

  1. Education Requirement: Make sure this is a minimum requirement – and necessary to get the job done.

  2. Experience Requirement: Make sure this lists the absolute minimum needed.  If the role is entry level no experience required should be noted.

  3. Licensure or Certification Requirement:  This should be any certification or license the role requires.

Helping your leaders focus their job requirements to just these three will open up your candidate pool and ensure people aren’t self-selecting themselves out before you have a chance to pitch the job to them.
